Behind the Scenes: The Crazy Train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok

Hey guys! So we hope y’all enjoyed our episode in Bangkok. What a crazy, crazy day that was! But what you didn’t see in that episode is how we actually got to Bangkok, which is a pretty interesting adventure in and of itself. Check it out.

In the days before we arrived in Thailand’s biggest city, we spent some time wandering through the northern part of the country, specifically in and around the city of Chiang Mai. We actually did a bit of filming in Chiang Mai, but there just wasn’t enough to include in the episode or to make an episode of its own. So all the stuff we shot currently sits on the shelf. Maybe we’ll put something together from it one of these days. Maybe save it for a “lost segments” episode on TV. Who knows. We’ll figure it out.

But! We did want to share this footage with you guys, which details our very long (and very interesting) night aboard the train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. We love, love, love to travel by train – in fact it’s probably our favorite way to get from place to place – and while we certainly enjoyed the ride to Bangkok, it was definitely unlike any other train ride we’ve ever taken. So. Y’all come along with us! It’s long, and mostly uncut. But it’s still pretty dadgum interesting like we said. And we think y’all might enjoy it!

So grab your seat. Grab a snack. And get settled in for the ride:

Pretty crazy, huh? What did you think? Ever been on that train, or have a story from another experience riding the rails that you wouldn’t mind sharing? We’d love to hear it! So either contact us, or just leave your comments down below.

Thanks as always for following along guys! Have a good one!

This was such an interesting peek into some of the realities of traveling ~ I could feel your early morning weariness! So glad you shared this with us. Your good humor, despite the cramped and noisy discomfort, serves a real life lesson for all travelers (and armchair travelers, too!). As always, you both warm our hearts ~ ❤️

  3. Nice blog and good to see Panhandle people traveling! I’m a fellow Amarilloan whose been living and traveling around Asia for about 14 years. I was just at that train station in Chiang Mai a couple days ago. They used to have a night train down to the south of Thailand that had a dining car that would change into a disco karaoke car at night and had a crazy ladyboy bartender/waitress who was missing 4 front teeth. She would crown one guest queen and one guest king and had a crown and tiara for the winners. No more alcohol on the Thai trains nowadays though.

DON’T MISS CAMBODIA, ANGKOR WAT AND SIEM REAP on your travels!

    • Hey Aaron! Too cool you’re from Amarillo! And that sounds like a crazy, crazy, CRAZY train ride! And we thought our ride was weird LOL! So great to hear from you and thanks for the kind words. Safe travels! (And we’ve been to Cambodia! It’s in an upcoming episode. Hope you get the chance to catch it! Cheers!)
