Our Saturday Night Travel Flick Picks: Finding “The Way”

Hey gang! Hope y’all are having a great weekend!

You know, few things get us excited about travel and motivated to get out and see the world, like a great movie. And there are actually a whole bunch of terrific travel-related films out there! Movies that will not only entertain you with a great story and great acting, but inspire you with beautiful visuals and a great message that’ll hopefully get you thinking about the world in a little different way. So if you’re sitting at home tonight, clicking through the TV channels or your Netflix library or your Amazon video account thinkin’, “sheesh… all these choices and there’s absolutely nothing to watch,” take heart. We’re here to help! Welcome to our first ever Saturday Night Travel Flick Pick!

the wayAnd our first recommendation is absolutely one of our favorite films, travel-related or otherwise. Written and directed by Emilio Estevez and starring his father, the legendary and uber-talented Martin Sheen, The Way is a touching, inspiring, feel-good kind of film that’ll get you thinking about family, friendship, faith and of course, travel. Good stuff. Here’s the movie’s official description:

“THE WAY is a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends and the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an irascible American doctor who comes to France to deal with the tragic loss of his son (played by Emilio Estevez). Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage “The Way of St. James” to honor his son’s desire to finish the journey. What Tom doesn’t plan on is the profound impact this trip will have on him. Through unexpected and oftentimes amusing experiences along “The Way,” Tom discovers the difference between “the life we live and the life we choose.”

And check out the trailer:

We’ve seen The Way a number of times and absolutely love, love, love it. And we’re determined that one of these days we’ll actually make the pilgrimage ourselves. So check it out! We think you’ll enjoy it. And after watching, do us a favor and come back to let us know what you thought!

Cheers y’all! Happy watching, and safe travels. 🙂

    Thanks for the recommendation- I’ll start the popcorn (breakfast of champions). {I can totally see you two walking this journey together!}

  2. Love this movie… I was lucky enough to have heard about it before it came out, and they had road-trip bus tour around the US with stop and a premier in Austin, So I got to meet Martin and Emilio at the Premier – It was very Cool. They have a connection to the Basque country side of Spain, so this was a personal project for them… no big Hollywood movie budgets.

    Cheers 2FTR
