Photos: The Epic, Other-Worldly Rice Terraces of Ping’An China

Yeah. Wow.

So nothing – nothing – could have prepared us for our very first sight of the spectacular rice terraces surrounding the tiny village of Ping’An in southern China. Sure, we’d seen a few pictures of the place here and there as we were doing our research before the trip. But nothing that really captured what the place is really, actually, honestly like. (The same could be said for a lot of these little places we visited during our adventure through China!)

And the day unfolded just as it did in the episode. We got drenched walking through the pouring rain up to the village, and only had a few precious minutes to get settled into the hotel before our local guide Tony came for us to take us higher up the mountainside. Which to be perfectly honest, we really weren’t all that excited about. It’s hiking first of all, which we just generally don’t enjoy. It had rained on us pretty much all day. We were tired. We were hungry. And all we really wanted to do was just crash in the room, rest, relax and dry out.

This had better be good, we both were thinking.

And holy moly man. Wow!

Standing atop the terraces and looking down on that view will probably always remain in the top five – or maybe the top three – most incredible, unbelievable sights we’ve ever seen. It’s one of those sights, and one of those places that, as you stand there looking over it your brain just can’t register that what you’re looking at is actually real. Amazing. And what’s even more amazing is that the terraces are still used by the local farmers today, just as they’ve been for hundreds of years. Imagine the labor that went into building the terraces, and the work it must take to continue working them! Just incredible.

So here are a few more photos from our afternoon above the terraces. Hope you guys like ’em! And hope you’ll one day get the chance to see them for yourselves. Because… geez man. ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers y’all! Safe travels!
