A bit about us, for those of you not familiar: we started “Two for the Road” a few years ago, when we were both living and working in Amarillo, Texas. We’re both originally from the Texas Panhandle and had called Amarillo home for many, many years – but one day, you could say we went a bit crazy. We both had good jobs in established careers - Dusty’s in television and Nik’s in orthodontics – as well as all the trappings of a fine life: a great house, great cars, big TVs, a hot tub, a boat, a golf cart and lots and lots of stuff.
Problem was, since we met way back in 1998 we both realized we had a thing for travel. Which we did, mind you, and did well together. We loved going places, seeing new things, meeting new people and living out a flurry of short-lived weekend adventures, only to have to return to work the following Monday so we could make money to pay for all the stuff that over the years we had accumulated. Until one day when we decided that we loved traveling more than we loved our stuff.
Anyway, to make a long story really short, over the course of a year and a half, we sold all that stuff – the house, the cars, the boat, every bit of it, right down to the cookware on the stove – and decided to hit the road for good, not knowing exactly where it would take us. And “Two for the Road” was born.
In the time since, we’ve put thousands of miles and several countries and two continents behind us. And today we’re still traveling regularly, exploring new places, meeting new people, finding new adventures and living the lives we always wanted (but never knew we’d be able to have). So, yeah. We’re blessed in so many ways and we never take it for granted.
We do actually have a home outside of Austin, Texas (though it seems we’re never there) and we do still have “day jobs,” in the form of a video production company we started called Stone Ranch Media (and its offshoot OrthoMedia). It pays the bills – because the travel pays virtually nothing – and keeps us criss-crossing the USA shooting videos for our clients, which we love.
Our goals with this website, in doing what we do, are: selfishly, to see and experience as much of this amazing world as we possibly can; and to hopefully inspire our viewers and readers (thats you!) to get up, get out and travel. Travel somewhere. Go someplace new. Experience something new. Meet new people. Get out of the “bubble” that so many people find themselves trapped in. It’s true that travel changes not only your life, but also your perspective on life. And you’ll never regret it.
So that’s us, in a nutshell. That’s why we’re here. We hope you like. We hope you follow. And we sincerely hope to meet you somewhere on the road.
