Puerto Rico: Living It Up in Crazy Cool Condado

Condado, San Juan, Puerto RicoWhen we realized we’d be visiting Puerto Rico for the first time (really visiting, not just dropping by on a cruise ship) we immediately started making a list of things we wanted to do and see, obviously. And to be perfectly honest, exploring the Condado neighborhood of San Juan wasn’t on the list. It never would have made the list in fact, because we just flat didn’t know anything about it. And as it turned out, it seemed not many people we know had ever heard of Condado either. After all, most of our friends and family who had visited Puerto Rico had only done so on a cruise… and when you come in by boat with only a few hours to explore, it’s only natural that most folks probably never wander outside of Old San Juan. A cool place, for sure. But obviously there’s much more out there…

It was only after talking with several folks in the travel biz did we realize that Condado was not only worth exploring, it was worth telling others about. And after spending several days living the Condado life for ourselves, we’d certainly have to agree.

Condado, San Juan, Puerto Rico– Before and during your visit, you should definitely check out condadoinsider.com. One of the reasons that so little is known about Condado to the outside world is that solid information about the area is pretty tough to find. Trust us. We looked before our visit. Google search after Google search only led us to a handful of places that had any good information about Condado, like where to stay, where to eat, what to do, etc. Realizing this was a big problem (and a big opportunity) the site’s owner set out to create the website, which is a one-stop shop for comprehensive info about the neighborhood. Not only hotels, restaurants and bars but also activities and upcoming events. Good stuff. Extremely helpful. So, like we said, check it out.

Condado, San Juan, Puerto Rico– Condado can be pricey. But what would you expect from Puerto Rico’s most fashionable address? There are lots of four and five star hotels and restaurants in Condado that are happy to charge you four and five star prices. Great news if you’re into that sort of thing. We’re poor folks, however, and have never really taken an interest or liking in the four and five star kind of life. But the good news for folks like you and us is that Condado also abounds in more price-friendly options. And its at those kinds of places we feel like you get a more authentic local experience. One of our favorite little local restaurants is called Orozco’s. Tremendous food and decent prices (though they may try to trick you and include the gratuity on your check without telling you, so watch our for that).  And then – believe it or not – one of the best burgers we’ve ever had was at a little place across the street from the Marriott called Buns Burger Shop. Again, decent prices and a great beer selection to boot. Definitely worth a visit when you tire of mofongo and lechon. That is, if you ever tire of mofongo and lechon.

Condado, San Juan, Puerto Rico– Speaking of the five star life, the San Juan Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino really is all swag and swank. A very cool spot in an absolutely ideal location. Full disclosure: our accomodations at the SJM were comped as part of our prize package. Otherwise, honestly, we don’t think we could have afforded to stay there. Not for five nights, at least. But if you’re looking for a great place to stay in San Juan, definitely check it out and see what kind of deal you can get. And we’re not just saying that because we got our rooms for free. In fact, at no point at all were we ever asked, told or pressured by anyone to do a video about our stay there. That simply wasn’t part of the deal. We included the resort in our video just because we thought it was a super cool spot, and we wanted to show you guys more of what it’s like. The people at the hotel – 99% of whom had no idea we were there on a vlogging assignment – were great. Friendly. Accomodating. Great service. And the location really is perfect, to the degree that most anything you need or want to do is within walking distance. So, yeah. Suffice it to say we liked it.

– One odd thing about Condado is that at night, the partiers and restaurant-goers come out in full force as you might expect, but so do the fitness buffs. And there are a lot of them in Condado. When the sun goes down they go for their runs on the often-narrow sidewalks of Condado, weaving and bobbing and hustling their way through the crowds. So what? You’re thinking. No big deal, right? Maybe not. But we were just amazed at how many of them there were. They were friggin’ everywhere. We were more than a little perplexed as to why they’d all opt to run in such a congested place to begin with. It can’t be fun. Maybe it’s their only option, we suppose. And why run in place full of so many fantastic restaurants? The sheer smell of Condado at night is amazing. Why torture yourself like that? Sheesh.

Anyway, those are the highlights. But certainly drop us a line if you’d like to know more, or want to pick our collective brain about Condado. We’ll be happy to chat.

If you have the time, Condado is absolutely worth a visit. And if you have more time, it’s absolutely a great place to stay..
